Easing Back-to-School Jitters for Preschoolers

The start of a new school year is an exciting time, but for preschoolers, it can also bring some big feelings. New classrooms, new teachers, new routines, and even saying goodbye to Mom or Dad in the morning can feel overwhelming. The good news is that there are simple ways families can help make the transition smoother and more positive.

Talk About School in a Positive Way

Before the first day, talk with your child about school and what they can expect. Keep the conversation upbeat and reassuring.

You might say:

  • “You’re going to have so much fun playing with your friends!”

  • “Your teacher will be there to help you.”

  • “Mommy/Daddy will always come back to pick you up.”

Try to avoid showing too much worry or uncertainty yourself. Children often pick up on our emotions, so a calm and confident attitude can help them feel more secure.

 Practice the School Routine

A few days before school starts, begin adjusting your child’s schedule. Practice waking up, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and leaving the house around the time you will on school mornings.

You can even practice a pretend school drop-off at home. Talk through what will happen when you arrive, who will help them, and when you will return.

Familiar routines can make new experiences feel much less scary.

 Let Them Help Prepare

Give your preschooler opportunities to participate in getting ready for school. Let them help choose their backpack, pick out clothes, or help pack items they need.

When children have some control over the process, they can feel more confident and excited about the changes ahead.

 Keep Goodbyes Short and Confident

One of the hardest parts of starting school can be saying goodbye.

It is completely normal for a child to cry at drop-off. Instead of repeatedly coming back or making a long goodbye, give them a loving hug, remind them that you will return, and confidently say goodbye.

Something as simple as:

“I love you! Have a great day. I’ll be back after school!”

can become a comforting goodbye routine.

Bring a Little Comfort From Home

At Bobcat Babies, we ask all of our families to bring in a family picture for their child. Having a familiar picture from home can be very comforting for preschoolers, especially during those first few days or weeks.

Many times, simply being able to look at their family picture throughout the day helps ease their anxiety and reminds them that their loved ones are still close, even while they are at school.

 Be Patient With Big Feelings

Your child may be more tired, clingy, emotional, or irritable during the first few weeks. Starting a new routine takes energy!

Give them extra patience and opportunities to talk about their day. Instead of only asking, “Did you have fun today?” try asking questions such as:

“What was your favorite thing you played with today?”

“Who did you play with?”

“What made you smile today?”

These questions can encourage children to share more about their experiences.

 Remember: It Takes Time!

Some children walk into their classroom on the first day without looking back. Others need several days, or even a few weeks, to feel completely comfortable. Both are normal.

At Bobcat Babies, we know that every child is different. Our goal is to provide a warm, loving, and welcoming environment where children can build relationships, explore through play, and feel safe as they grow.

A little preparation, a lot of reassurance, and plenty of patience can make the transition back to school a much happier experience for the whole family.

Here’s to a wonderful new school year filled with learning, laughter, friendships, and lots of fun!
